I welcome the government plan to adoption. This is needed gesture to embrace the social problem (Korea is one of top adoptee-export countries), not only an action to counteract low fertility society.
Recent days, every society is transforming into confusing diversity. Korea based on deep-seated Confucian patriarchy is very slow to change, but is moving forward. Under this diverse culture, to call for a uniform style of 'ideal' family seems to be out-of-date idea, from my view.
It could be a difficult for an adoptee child under single parent. But suppose one being brought up in a foreign country under different-looking parents; can we say is she or he better find their identity in foreign culture than one with single parent in Korea? I didn't mean to say the drastic example, but my point is that we are not supposed to disregard the right of 'differently' living people under the ruler of our Korean 'homogeneity'.
I think Korean society needs to be more open to heterogenity. Keeping in the ideal family ideology, the low birth rate problem cannot be solved. Back to issue of the adoption of singles, their right to choose should be guaranteed. A step by step social change could contribute to the society with less discrimination.
